One day as Squirrel Nutkin and Nutcose Nutkin were walking through the woods acorn hunting, they saw a cracked egg on the side of the path. They heard a peeping sound coming from the egg. It went, "peep, peep, peep." Squirrel Nutkin and Nutcose Nutkin walked over for a closer look.

"It's a newborn chick!" Squirrel Nutkin exclaimed.

"I wonder what happened to it?" Nutcose wondered aloud, "I wonder if its mother left it?"

"I don't know?" Squirrel Nutkin said, "But I do know that we should take the chick to Chicken Poo-Poo so we can find out more."

Squirrel Nutkin and Nutcose Nutkin carefully picked up the egg and set it in their wagon with the acorns. They carefully turned the wagon around and dragged it back through the forest. They went back first to Squirrel Nutkin's house to drop off the acorns and get a blanket to put in the bottom of the wagon for the chick. Then they headed off to Chicken Poo-Poo's house.

When they got to Chicken Poo-Poo's house, Nutcose Nutkin ran up to the door, knocked and said, "Please let us in Chicken Poo-Poo! This is an emergency!"

Chicken Poo-Poo opened the door and said, "What is the emergency?"

"Well," said Nutcose, "We went acorn hunting in the woods, and saw this egg on the ground. We went over and looked and there was a newborn chick in it, left all alone. It was peeping and we think it needs help."

"Bring the chick inside," Chicken Poo-Poo said. Squirrel Nutkin and Nutcose Nutikin brought the chick inside.

Chicken Poo Poo told the Squirrels to gently lay down the cracked egg near the small, cozy fireplace while he grabbed his tools. Chicken Poo Poo put on his thick, round, black glasses and picked up his pencil and notepad. While Chicken Poo Poo peered to this side and the other, wrote down words and little sketches in his notepad, and sometimes just stood still to observe something about the egg and the little wonder inside, Squirrel Nutkin heard little peeps while the examination was in process.

With no prior warning, Chicken Poo Poo loudly exclaimed, "This can not be!".

"What can not be?", exclaimed Nutcose Nutkin!

With a deep breath and a solemn face, Chicken Poo declared, "This is a rare chick from yonder lands, that hasn't been seen in our side of the forest in many moons. It is called a Farama Bird. They are very special and very important. Squirrel and Nutcose Nutkin, your lives will never be the same. As the ones who found this treasured Farama, you are now its guardians and protectors for the rest of your lives!"

Nutcose Nutkin stared ahead and didn't say a word. Squirrel Nutkin whimpered, but then smiled from ear to ear. Squirrel Nutkin said, "C'mon Nutcose. Stop starin'. We got take take that lil' Farama home and start teaching it the ins and outs of life in the forest."

Chicken Poo smiled a gentle smile and said, "I am delighted to hear that you are happily bringing home your new Farama bird. However, you will have much to learn. There are things you will discover that you never knew existed. And just beware, you are going to find that some unexpected things will happen in your future!"
