Chapter 11: Bad At Tests

atomisis Literary / Fiction 22 Jul 2026

So, I found out a bunch of stuff on my family tree without doing one of those ancestry things or a DNA test. I know it could be traced back with records and whatnot, though DNA might not pan out so well ultimately. I don't know.

But I do know that the weirdo conspiracy thing about the pyramids is close to the truth, probably one of them, I guess there are several different stories. I don't even believe in UFOs. Even now, as I say that I was drawn up into a spaceship. But this one wasn't a UFO it was a specific ship on a specific mission. I guess.
It specifically came to earth (is that supposed to be capitalized? Earth?) to at least check on me. I got the impression it was supposed to pick me up and take me back with it. I'm not sure but I think I didn't pass the, sort of, tests I guess they were? They had me do all these different sorts of things and they were obviously tracking like my time or if I understood what was expected...that kind of thing. I couldn't tell if I was doing good.
In the end they only said, or...like told me but they didn't use words for that; they told me that I would not be returning with them. As they had expected me to.

Umm, there is some ancestry connection way back where my ancestors are from this planet they are from. I sounds like there were some of these 'aliens' put here way back. I don't know if they got lost track of or were research type people or even, maybe criminals like with Australia? It may be there are others here. Maybe that's where they went after dropping me back? I do know that somehow my...whatever their version of DNA is has been kept pretty separate from everyone else. Maybe that's even the issue with why I'm staying here on earth...Earth.
So maybe they have a list of people here that they have to run these tests on and get together the ones that pass the tests.

It's really weird to find out that you are not what you always thought you knew. I guess they have more advanced stuff, tech-wise than we do. So I can hold onto that, which would be good. As long as I don't talk about it too much I could always feel like I'm from a high tech family. I do wonder if there's any other people this happened to, and maybe they're embarrassed and keeping it to themselves.

Chapter 22: Wakey Wakey

atomisis Contemporary 26 Jul 2026

I tried to make myself get fulfilled at my job. I didn't let the self-talk get negative. I didn't look out too far ahead, tried to stay in the present, after all in the present is where change happens and maybe something would change. In me, or in the company or people around me. So I didn't plan on change but I guess I had been hoping something will force change my life.
Then I realized that every loser ever has waiting for something to force a change. If only I knew what I wanted. I was really capable as far as knowing what I didn't want.

Fast forward to now. So I'm more aware of different things I don't want, not on top of what I do want. Though I am sort of, maybe actually sure of what I do want, except it's completely out of reach.
Completely.
Not, like twenty million dollars. There's really no starting point on what I want. Money I could strive for, maybe never get it but it would be a focused goal.
'Actually, I do have to strive for money now..', I quit my job about a year ago.

"Wakey, wakey..." someone snapped their fingers. 'literally snapping your fingers at me..?' I usually am not amazed at the thoughtlessness and stupidity of retail customers...
"Hey!" - and another finger snap

"Yes Ma..." I started to say 'Ma'am' but this was a kid...well,no...yeah a kid, "Excuse me?" I looked right at her.
She didn't flinch; had sort of a smirk...proud of herself... "Are you addressing me?" I went with my full authority adult voice.
"Mister Dee..!!" she started laughing.

There's no one here who knows me. 'I'm three States away...Mister Dee?...how?'

Chapter 33: Student Teacher

atomisis Contemporary 30 Jul 2026

I didn't recognize her because her hair was super curly and I'd never realized it in two years of teaching and coaching because it was always pulled back in a ponytail.
She saw it register.

"Say it. Go on..." she isn't just glad I recognize her "say my name." It's like she's talking to a kid, but not just one her age.
I stare. She smiles *now I really recognize her*.
"Uh-huuuh... You'd always know me."
It's the way she says it. I don't say her name. I won't say it, not with the smug way she just told me I will always know her. *Something off in her tone..?*
"It's Ok.." she rushes to reassure "it's still me.", again almost as if speaking to a child.

"Josephine..?" I ask, a question in my voice but I know she understands that I one hundred percent know it is her. I'm just asking because I sense something off.
She makes her eyes big. They're very blue. A nod, more smile from her.

"What're you doing here?" I ask

She tells me she just got a job. In this store. Her family moved here...like, of all the places possible. Here.
She's vague when I ask "How here?"...it's not the biggest most popular place around. 'Her parents'. Of course that would be the explanation after all she's only like fifteen.
I joke, "Well, good...so you didn't run away to follow me."
She gives an expected 'Ewww..!' but she also has this knowing smile. Not *knowing*, like I'm onto the reality of the situation though, something *different*. Like she knows way more than I do and I have no idea of it.
"Sorry." I apologize, just in case I've crossed some line. She slightly nods to accept it. But there's a slight smirk. Maybe not even, maybe I think I see something not there. It seems to me there is...again like I have no idea at all about something she knows. She approves. I think anyway...she approves me apologizing. Not because she was offended, it seems to me, but because...and that's where I'm not sure. It's not 'smug' but it's *expected*; not by her personally but in a hierarchical order - somewhere. Like the universe is right and in balance with my apology.

We make small talk. I really do enjoy her being here, seeing her again. She clearly likes seeing me again. I was her favorite teacher. I think mainly because I was part-time and never had to be hard on the students. I realize she was one of my favorite students. I guess I knew that, I had never thought that way before; that she was a 'favorite'.
By way of getting back to work and having her leave I told her that.
"I need to get back to work. But I'm glad to see you again. It'd be nice to run into each other once in a while." I smile.

She makes no attempt to walk away.
In fact she stands looking at me...again I can't swear to it but there's a slightly bemused look to her. I don't say anything, turn and go over to some things I was straightening up.
Josephine follows and begins to do what I'm doing.
I try to ignore it, to not recognize what is happening. Finally I turn to her.

"Am I doing it wrong?" Josephine asks when I turn.
It dawns on me, she had gotten a job here she'd said.
Josephine realizes, starts laughing.
Now she has a good laugh. Not infectious but fun, not too loud just loud enough and so I watch her for a moment...because...I don't know. She's at that age where all this stuff is coming together that is going to make her a woman but not at the age where all that has loaded fully yet.
"Shhh...!" I shush her, "There's customers around.."
She makes a face, exaggerated horror over it. But she keeps laughing...slowing it and going to making faces at me over my need to keep a lid on fun.
She picks up an out of place item, puts it right...makes a comical face at me over it. I don't know what to feel
