“Mother, I know that you detest this topic and would rather let the sleeping dog lie, but I think it’s high time that this dog awoke and got out of bed!”

Mother stares at me, clearly unamused. Throwing dignity to the wind, I press on, “To prevent us from having any skeletons in the closet, I really think we must let the cat out of the bag. The people must know!”

She finally speaks. “Stacey. You still haven’t even told me what you’re talking about.”

I look at her, surprised. “Oh! I was talking about the elephant in the room.”

Prompt: I said, pull the red wire!!

“I said pull the RED wire Nick!” I growl at the ghost in front of me. It didn’t take long after the blast for Nick to come back. Just, not alive anymore.

“Bill, you’re forgetting that I’m COLORBLIND!!!” He glares.“And how did you manage to survive?”

He gives me a poke, but his finger slides through as if I was air. I roll my eyes and huff. “This is pointless. How are we going to get out of these catacombs?!”

He laughs, a hollow sound. “How are you going to get out of here. Remember, I’m a ghost now.”

Prompt: When You SHOULD Cry Over Spilled Milk

I stared morosely at the sullen and hollow faces of my family. My youngest sister, Milly, stared hopefully up at me, the faintest of glows in her cheeks. “Did Bess give any milk?”

I swallow, dreading what I have to say. “She did.”

Pa looks at me, confused. “Where’s the pail then? Can’t Ya see were starving in here?!”

I bite my lips, almost drawing blood. “I spilled it.”

He rises, towering above me, “Ya what?”

Tears spill down my chin as I look up into his eyes. “I spilled it.”

Milly clutches my hand tightly as she cries.

Prompt: "When You Should Put All Your Eggs in One Basket."

“Get back here, kid!” the merchant shouts as I flee through the city clutching a basket of eggs.

See, I would’ve paid for them, but he accused me of stealing just because I was looking at his stall.

“Nuh-uh!” I yelled, scrambling up a wall with the agility of a monkey.

So, being a frightened little urchin, I put all the eggs in one basket and ran.

The man glared up at me as I sat on the roof, taunting him by blowing raspberries.

Well, maybe I wouldn’t have paid for them. But a kid’s got to eat somehow.

I look down at my daughter, “Why a dog?”

She ponders slowly, “I don’t know. Maybe I want to be a cat!”

I press my lips together barely keeping in a laugh. “Why a cat instead of a dog?”

“I don’t know. Maybe a snake would be better.”

“Snakes are mean. A snake bit me once.”

“They are?! It did?!”

“Yep.”

“Then I definitely don’t want to be a snake.”

“What’s wrong with being you?”

“I’m boring.”

“Honey, being you is the best thing you could ever be.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

“Thanks mummy.”

“If you don’t move that robber now, I will murder you in your sleep.”
