it's an odd saying, "food for thought". why not just say, "here's something for you to think about"? well, if there's one thing i've learnt in my years of living, its that humans love to abbreviate, truncate, shorten, reduce, and so on forth. i guess you could say that our lifetimes seem so short in the grand scheme of things, that wasting our time on long sentences that trip the tongue and make you stop and think it through, is just useless. i could be spending that time doing jumping jacks or finishing off a book i've put off for a year.

so we put chop up a bunch of phrases and stick some together and we step back and admire it. then we tack on a figurative meaning and throw it into the soup of funky idioms swirling in the abyss of the merriam webster dictionary or oxford or whatever publisher you use. now, we wait for the rest of humanity to catch up and learn the connotations behind every new group of terms and we're set. i can now tell someone to "chew on this!" and throw a grenade at them and they'll know what's coming before they see the bomb.

it's kind of like we're all connected. there are all these words and phrases and languages that most of us use in our everyday life, and somehow the person you're directing it to will understand what it means and respond in a similar manner. it's mind boggling, really. the person reading this right now will interpret my words and make sense of what i'm saying and translate it to something coherent for them, then write it down in the comments (or not), and then i'll look at it and the cycle continues. just constantly processing.
