I sat there in the shadows of the car, glad that it hid my smile. The smile that spread across my face every time he looked at me, every time he said something clever.

Yet, there I sat making a fool out of myself. I wasn't jumbled up like in the movies. I just couldn't think of something smart to say, which would've been fine had I just shut up.

Of course my first crush couldn't have been on a random stranger. Instead it was on my mom's new friend's son. That was why he was driving right now, my mom can't drive in the dark and he had offered to help.

In my mind he was perfect, his hair was just the right shade of reddish brown, and he was tall with very few freckles.

"What did the sheepdog say to the cow?" I asked hoping to hear him laugh, I never have before.

"Mooove," he said guessing my ending.

I sat there, embarrassed that I had tried the stupid joke, and wondering how to fix it, before I could think I tried again, and said “What’s your favorite season?”

He responded quickly, “deer season,” then continued, “What’s yours”

Finally, this was the moment, and without missing a beat I answered “Cajun 2 step.” This time, we both laughed, along with the rest of my family. I decided right then that I liked his laugh, it was like a wave crashing against the shore, so gentle, yet so strong,I thought to myself, really everything about him is like that.

I was starting to drift into a day dream when the car turned off, we were home, and he would be leaving, who knew when I’d see him again, but at least he liked my joke, and I wasn’t a total fool in front of him.
