Chapter 22: Creature Feature

Stormy-Seas Fantasy 21 Sep 2026

Cameron was never one to back down from a challenge so when she saw the Mythical Creature Race she just couldn't help herself! That's how she found herself in her current position. Bridle in hand, selkie only a few hundred yards from her grasp.

The white horse would sure look normal to anyone, unless you knew where to look. The tips of its white main were tinged green, and its eyes were fully black and sliced with white. It didn't know it was being observed clearly or it would have done a better job as disguising itself. She crept closer, through the tall weeds bordering the lake. Everyone else had already started their race and here she was still without a mount, but she could not afford to be hasty. She could not afford to be caught, or she would be way further behind, especially if she had to find another selkie. She already took too long to find this one!

She knew she could not catch it yet lest she be disqualified later on but she needed to make sure she knew where one was. She needed a head start. Especially against the experts who had gathered.

The creature was relaxed in the grass nearby. Laying in a comfortable position on the grass. For a moment she wondered if what she was going to do would count as cheating. She was just testing so it should be fine right?

The meat in her sealed bag was heavy. A large cut of deer ribs. Slightly rotted to smell worse, all natural, she didn't even shoot it. Just. . . scooted it a bit to the left. It took her some effort to set it down in the grass. It was heavy alright? She walked away after setting it down. As quickly as possible while still staying quiet. She found a place in one of the nearby trees to see in the selkie would be interested. It took a long time, she almost fell asleep but just as her eyes slipped shut she heard a gruff echoing grunt as the selkie crept closer before eating away at the corpse.

She first pumped in the air before creeping away. Set and ready to tame a selkie for her first race.

Chapter 33: Kelpie

Stormy-Seas Fantasy 22 Sep 2026

Carmen sat in the same spot now. Her hands gripping the rough leather of the pearl oiled saddle her father had helped her make. The rope bit into her hand in the early morning as she watched from the shadows. Another piece of meat hanging from her belt, at the ready.

The race had finally begun.

Her hand tensed as the kelpie stepped from the river in all of its black watery glory. Kelp and grim falling from its body as it shook to reveal the pure white stallion beneath as it rested in the summer sun. Basking as the perlino like coat glittered. She much preferred the kelp if she was being honest. Rope in hand she kept closer, watching as the stallion ate at the grass beneath it.

She doubted herself for a few moments, as she stood only a few meters from the beast. She was going to have to train on land for much of their time together if she succeeded in making it their race. The kelpie got closer, the smell of salt and water filled her nose as it approached. It sniffed the air gently and wandered closer. Huffing at the ground, waiting for prey. She had waited too long. She took a gentle step backwards as she detached the meat from her belt. Its smell perforated the air and she almost coughed.

It was very sudden, the kelpie's reaction that is. It was immediately on the meat much faster than it had been the other day. Must have been starved, she thought as she watched it wolf down the meat before. . .

And with a snap of her wrist the rope tightened on the kelpie's legs. The rope seemed to merge with its flesh for a moment and it began to struggle against her but without its front feet it had no where to go but forwards. Straight towards her. She was lucky enough to move to the wised as it reared and missed her only slightly. She was quick to shove the leather bridal on its face as it opened is maw to growl at her but wasn't lucky enough to miss touching the animal.

Her arm got caught on its side and it pulled her towards the water. With her last hope in mind she pulled out the extra bottle of oil she had stored and poured some down her arm watching as it detached and pulled from the entirely blackened and rotting coat. It struggled despite this and as she pulled the rope tighter to force its head down. Just barely containing it. Her efforts were not in vain as it lowered itself and only pulled backwards and away from her despite the iron bit forcing it to stay in this form.

"See-" She huffed, "Not, huph, so bad," The stallion gave her a snort and pinned its ears at her as she slowly tightened the rope around this feet and pulled it through the halter from as far away as she could get. Just as tense as before as she pulled the horse along slowly. Away from the water for now, though she hoped to make use of its water traveling abilities later but for now she needed to do some groundwork.

(Please ignore that I messed up in the last chapter of this Selkie and Kelpie got mixed up in my head :(
