Chapter 22: Monster - Nachtgeschrei

ellio-elliot Romance 4 days ago

The basement of the church was cold, but not overly so. There was just enough light coming in through the barred window and the slit where the door was to get an impression of the details of the crypt I was being held in, but nothing more. I rolled over from where I was lying on my side to give that side a break from the uncomfortable stone. My hands were cuffed and a metal collar had been put around my neck with a chain attached to a corner of the room.

How long had I been here at this point? I knew I had been here long enough to see more than 3 cycles of the sun, the colors of the sky changing during sunrise and sunset being my sole source of entertainment unless I was really in the mood for cloud watching or trying to birdwatch. The nuns had been giving me raw meat and a saucer of water once a day, but the nuns came around 3 times each day to pray over me, to try and exercise the "monster" from me and make me feel guilty about myself.

I still hadn't decided what I wanted to do. Did I want to leave? Did I want revenge? Did I want him back? Or did I just want everything to go back to the way it was.

It was a full moon that night.

We'd been secretly seeing each other like this for months now, with hands on skin on starlit nights, our clothes wrinkled and draping carelessly. He'd cupped my face the night before and told me he loved me, voice breathy and reverent. My hands were busy unbuttoning, each button guiding him closer as my calloused hands worked on silver attached to silk. It burned, but it was worth it just to see him. All of him. Only for me to see.

But he had convinced me that he could handle it, that he could handle my secret. I told him to meet me by the old oak tree and bring something to protect himself just in case. That had made a questioning look cross his face, but I didn't think to ask. I thought he knew what he was getting into, that he wouldn't panic when the time came. It was still me, right?

Suddenly there was the sound of a click, and the door was creaking open. The light blinded me for a second as I shifted from lying to sitting, and as my vision adjusted, I saw him. The man I had loved. The source of my sorrows.

"Louis. You're here." My tone was devoid of emotion, like I was just pointing out a leaf on the floor.

"Sebastian." His tone was guarded, maybe even nervous.

"Why?"

"I-" He paused. I stared at him with dead eyes. "I just wanted to see how you were doing."

"Well," I gestured vaguely to the rags I was wearing, the bindings, and my generally unwashed self. "How am I doing then?"

"You know what I meant." He muttered as he looked at the floor.

"Is this not what you expected, seeing me again? Were you hoping I'd see you and beg for you to free me and run away with me? Or for me to be the "monster" you wanted to believe I am, so you could be sure you made the right choice?" I stood up from where I was seated. "What do you want from me, Louis?"

"I just wanted closure. Do you not feel any guilt about that night?" He barked.

Days of unsaid words tumbled out of my mouth, bitter and drowned in tears. "Why should only I bear the guilt of what happened that night? When you were just as much a participant as I was?"

I remembered that night. I'd been forced to relive it every minute of every day since, while being chained in the basement of this godforsaken church. I'd had to relive it while the nuns prayed over me and ignored my pleas for help, for release, for someone to listen to me. I'd hear the cries of the townspeople and felt the phantom pains of being tackled and held down.

"You're the one who's a monster! Not me! You're an abomination to God." His eyes held so much vitriol, nothing like the loving looks I was so used to.

The only damage done that night was to their relationship. No one had been hurt, and no one was going to be hurt. When Louis had cried out for help, I had tried to cover his mouth to calm him down, but it was too late, and all I had wanted to do once the townspeople came was to flee.

"Do you want me to tell them your secrets then, huh? At least I'm not a hypocrite and know I'm not the only one who has sinned."

"They'll never believe you," He sneered. He wasn't wrong. As soon as people had gotten close, he had completely changed and had claimed that I had come onto him and had transformed into some sort of "monster" once he tried to deny me.

"So is that why you buried me down here, so no one could know about you? About us?" I strained against the chains, trying to get closer to him.

He stepped back, fear flashing across his face.

"I thought you loved me." I felt my broken heart crumble.

The silence hung heavy between us, if only for a moment too long.

"I'm engaged now."

My eyes jumped back to him and I stared at him in shock.

"Wha- to who?"

"To Katie. My father has been saying she'd make a good match, and I've decided to follow his advice."

Katie had been one of our friends growing up. She was someone neither of us ever crushed on, we had never crushed on any girls. Because of that, everyone just thought of us as gentlemen. Katie had a crush on me, something I had known forever. She'd tried to make it known, but I couldn't stand to break my friend's heart, so I changed the subject before she was ever able to outright ask. How ironic.

"...Promise me one thing, for old times' sake?" My voice barely loud enough to be heard.

Louis' gaze softened, and for a second I saw the man I love return.

"Don't break her heart too, ok?" My voice cracked, leaking emotion.

"I promise." He said breathily, finally meeting my eyes.

He sank to the floor and a sob ripped through his throat. One hand covered his mouth as he started to shake, the other covering his eyes. Did I want to embrace him? To yell at him about all he'd done to wrong me? Or did I just want everything to go back to the way it was.

I just watched, like I was a spectre observing myself and Louis.

The memory flashed before me of my transformation that night. I'd warned him to stand back a bit, and I had taken off anything of value I had been wearing, much to the appreciation of Louis. I'd smiled and asked if he liked what he was looking at and he had giggled in return. He draped a blanket around me to make sure I wasn't cold and we had waited for the moon to reach its peak.

I was used to it, the transformation. I knew the rhythm it took with all the steps. First, I'd start to grow hairy, second I'd gain claws and sharper teeth, and finally I'd start to grow, becoming the "monster" that I hid away from everyone else. I should have noticed his aprehension as I grew sharper, and the fear when I had started to grow. When my attention was fully back to him, I had tried to come closer, to settle next to him and enjoy his embrace while the two of us waited out the moonlight, but that never got to happen.

He always said he loved dogs.

"There's nothing I can do to fix this, is there?" I thought about his words for a second.

"No, there isn't." I sat down as well and tried to get as close to him as my bindings would allow.

He let out a broken sound, something a mix between a laugh and a sob.

"Even if I said sorry..."

"It wouldn't change where we are now."

Louis stared at the door, his brows furrowing in thought. "What would you do if I opened the door right now and let you escape?"

"I'd leave the town and start a new life, I guess. Either I'd make a life in the woods, or I'd keep walking until I made it somewhere new."

Wordlessly, he stood up and fished a keyring from his pockets. He gently placed a hand on my shoulders, and my breath hitched at how close he was. He took a key from the ring and leaned in as he released me from the collar and chain. I could feel his breath hot on my neck as he gently removed it. His fingers brushed against my neck, checking to see if I was hurt, before pulling away. Part of me screamed at me to lean into him, to feel his body against mine once more, but I sat still as he moved to unlock my cuffs.

He held my hands in his, and I could feel my heart beating as I squeezed his hands in mine and he did the same. A little gesture we used to do. To communicate when words failed to express our affections for each other.

Holding his hand, I guided him to stand up and follow me out of the church's crypt. The sun was warm against my skin, but not as warm as Louis' hands. As we walked behind the church where the forest began, it was me this time who broke the contact as I turned to walk away.

I stood and looked back at Louis from the treeline. "I'll haunt you for the rest of your days."

And then I ran. Further into the woods than I'd ever gone before, until the town disappeared behind the forest and trees.

"I wouldn't have it any other way, my love." But Sebastian would never hear this.

Weeks later, when the full moon returned, Louis would see a flash of fur from outside and wonder. Was it him? He'd never know. He was already gone.
