You wake up. Quite jarringly, in fact. Your head hurts, and you seem to be in a polished metal box. There's a set of doors on one side, but no doorknob. Right next to the door, there's a small panel. It has half a dozen buttons, labeled 1-6.
The button with the number 6 looks as if it's out of order. The button is hanging out of the socket by a red wire.
You're sure you've been in a place like this before, but you seem to remember it moving. Yes, these things are supposed to move. This one must be stuck. Call for help? Yes, you can call for help. But... how? You have no way to contact any people, and the elevator has nothing but the doors and the buttons.
Maybe you should press one.
You press button number 5. The whole box shakes a bit and starts to move. It keeps moving for a while, and then jerks to a stop.
The 2 doors slide apart, and a beautiful view of a wheat field with purple mountains in the background greets you. The smell of fresh rain and flowers hits you like... something that hits aggressively. It feels like it's calling for you to go out there. You feel that it's a place of peace and happiness.
You step lightly out of the box, bracing for something to happen as your foot hits the ground. But nothing does happen, and your other foot follows the first. You take a deep breath and try to appreciate the scenery. The doors are an oddity. They appear to be standing freely with no supports, a random pair of doors in the middle of a field. They're still open, and you can see the inside of the box.
It feels like the doors are going to close soon. It seems that if those doors close, they won't open again.
You take a moment to weigh the pros and cons of both staying out here and heading back into the elevator. And it seems that moment was just enough for you to not notice that the doors had already closed behind you. Once you do notice this, you turn around and see the elevator burrow underneath the ground. Did someone else need to use the elevator?
Oh well. At least you get to take a good look at the other side of the field you've gotten yourself into. But there isn't a lot to look at that you haven't seen before: the same wheat fields, the same purple mountains, the same aggressive smell of fresh rain and flowers.
Without much else to do, you wander around for what feels like a few minutes. There isn't really a whole lot going on, though, apart from the serene scenery you're already starting to get used to.
Perhaps it's a little too peaceful...
The lack of any real imminent danger makes you feel a bit uneasy.
After all, you know there's more to life than wheat fields and distant mountains. But that's all you've been seeing for the past... how long has it been now? Hours? Days? It's hard to tell for sure. Something is telling you that you can't trust the sun in the sky to keep track of time.
There still isn't a whole lot to do around here. Nonetheless, you take a good while to consider all of your options...
You could just go back and wait for the elevator again. There has to be a panel somewhere to get it to your floor...
Or, you could continue enjoying the scenery and trek into the mountains. Who knows, maybe there'll be another elevator submerged in all of the purple?
All you have is time. Even the sun says so. You don't feel any different, so it must've just been a few minutes. If it had been any longer than that, you'd know.
The rain starts to heavily cry onto you, rapidly making your clothes soggy and heavier like a metal kettlebell. Seeking for shelter, you spot some trees in the distance, their scrawny trunks spiraling high into the sky, with rich golden leaves branching far and wide into the perfect shape of an umbrella's head. Rushing over with your hand weakly defending you from the rain, you try to escape the grey cloud above you. Yet it follows.
You hurry to the trees. Safety starts with shelter.
Finally, you make it. Kneeling down under the tree, you breathe a sigh of relief, eyes still glued to where the elevator once was. It hasn't returned yet. You still have time.
Leaves above you rustle and crunch, clouding your ears with a soothing white noise. As you start to drift off, you open your eyes to the feel of an animal by your hand. It's... a bird? You question. It looks like any other gear, but with wings. You pet it gently. It coos by your touch. Soon, more gears float down from the tree above, revealing to you their flock.
