Chapter One: The Things We Say

Clara Bennett had always thought there was a difference between a lie and a mistake.

A mistake was when you forgot.

A lie was when you knew the truth and chose to hide it.

At least, that was what she told herself.

It was easy to believe when she was sitting in class, listening to her teacher explain honesty and responsibility. It was harder when she was standing in front of the mirror five minutes before school, staring at her messy hair and saying:

“I’m ready.”

She wasn’t.

Her backpack wasn’t packed. Her hair was not cooperating. She had forgotten to finish one part of her homework.

But “I’m ready” didn’t feel like a lie.

It felt like a promise.

And that was the thing about words. Clara had noticed that people used them differently.

“I’m fine” could mean someone was actually fine.

Or it could mean they didn’t want to explain.

“I don’t care” could mean they didn’t care.

Or it could mean they cared too much.

Words were strange like that.

They could mean exactly what they said.

Or they could mean something completely different.

“Clara!”

She grabbed her backpack.

“I’m coming!”

Her little brother, Ben, was standing at the bottom of the stairs.

“You said that two minutes ago.”

“I was almost ready two minutes ago.”

Ben smiled.

“That means you weren’t ready.”

Clara pointed at him.

“You are becoming too observant.”

“You taught me.”

She couldn’t argue with that.

School was ordinary.

Which was good.

Clara liked ordinary.

Ordinary meant she knew what to expect.

Her best friend, Sophie, met her at her locker.

“You look tired.”

Clara closed her locker.

“I’m not.”

Sophie gave her a look.

Not a suspicious look.

A friend look.

The kind that said, I know you better than that.

“You stayed up late again.”

“No.”

“You definitely did.”

Clara sighed.

“Maybe.”

Sophie smiled.

“There it is. The truth.”

Clara rolled her eyes.

“I wasn’t lying.”

“You were avoiding the answer.”

“That’s different.”

“Is it?”

Clara opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

She hated when Sophie had a point.

At lunch, the conversation moved between homework, weekend plans, and the latest school drama.

Someone at the next table was telling a story that was clearly exaggerated.

“I was running so fast, I basically flew.”

Nobody believed that.

But everyone laughed.

Clara watched them.

People lied all the time.

Small lies.

Funny lies.

Polite lies.

Necessary lies.

The world was built on thousands of tiny things people said that weren’t completely true.

She wondered what would happen if words didn’t work that way.

If every sentence became reality.

She laughed quietly at the thought.

Impossible.

That afternoon, Clara got home later than usual.

Her mom was in the kitchen.

“How was your day?”

“Good.”

It was automatic.

A normal answer.

But then she noticed her mom looking at her.

“You sure?”

Clara hesitated.

She had gotten a lower grade on a quiz than she expected. Nothing terrible. Nothing worth worrying about.

But she didn’t want to talk about it.

“I’m fine.”

The words came out easily.

Her mom smiled.

“Okay.”

And Clara walked upstairs.

She didn’t notice anything strange.

Not yet.

That night, she sat at her desk, staring at her unfinished homework.

She had told herself all day she would finish it.

She hadn’t.

She picked up her pencil.

“I already finished this.”

She said it jokingly.

Just to hear how ridiculous it sounded.

Nothing happened.

She laughed.

“Good.”

Because for a second, the thought had crossed her mind.

What if it did?

What if saying something could make it true?

She shook her head.

That was impossible.

Words weren’t magic.

They were just words.

And Clara Bennett had no idea how wrong she was.
