Chapter 11: The Vaporizer

kullybones Fantasy 1 Apr 2026

The young man stepped heavily into the narrow alley, his chest tight and burning from the run, each breath dragging through him like broken glass. He had been sprinting moments ago, chased by that sound—that scraping, dragging presence he knew as the Harper—but now it was gone. That was the only reason he had slowed to a walk. The silence didn’t calm him. It pressed in, thick and unnatural, swallowing even the echo of his own footsteps. He turned his head slightly, listening for anything, but there was nothing behind him. No movement, no voice, no trace. “The Harper… Its getting stronger.” he muttered under his breath, as if saying the name might bring the hunter back, or prove he had never lost it at all.

He kept moving forward, slowly, and cautious, his hand brushing along the cold brick wall to steady himself. The alley stretched thin and dark until it ended abruptly at a tall chain link fence, its links worn and stained with age. At the center hung a rusted lock, thick and corroded, clinging stubbornly to the latch like it had no intention of ever opening again. He approached it with hesitation, glancing once more over his shoulder at the empty alley. It didn’t make sense. The Harper was next to impossible to lose under pursuit.

He grabbed the gate and shook it, the metal clanging loudly against itself, the sound cutting through the silence like a mistake. He froze immediately after, his breath caught halfway in his chest as he listened. Still nothing. No response, no return of that dragging noise. His eyes dropped slowly to the lock, something about it pulling his attention in a way he couldn’t explain. It looked old, lifeless even, but as he reached toward it, his fingers hovering just inches away, a strange feeling crept up his arm. Not fear exactly—something deeper, something familiar.

His hand trembled as his fingertips finally brushed the rusted surface, and in that instant, the air seemed to tighten around him, like the alley itself was holding its breath. A faint glow flickered at his fingertips, barely visible at first, like embers waking from ash. It spread slowly across the lock, not like fire, not like heat, but like the metal was being unmade, its rust curling inward, its shape collapsing in on itself without a sound. The young man stared, frozen, as the thick corroded lock disintegrated beneath his touch, falling away into fine, dark dust that slipped through the chain links and vanished before it ever hit the ground. The gate creaked softly as the weight gave way, and for the first time since he started running, something shifted inside him—not relief, not safety, but the quiet realization that whatever the Harper was… it wasn’t the only thing that had been growing stronger.

Chapter 22: The Aberration

brandit-the-bruin Literary / Fiction 14 Jul 2026

He called it the Harper because of the sound it made: deep, resonating inside his chest, like harp music. At first it had been just the Vibration, back when it was still just a weak hum in the back of his head, one he could pretend he imagined. Then, when it broke free and started unmaking things, it became the Harper of Horror. This was quickly shortened to just Harper.

The young man didn't understand the vibration, and he didn't want to. But he knew that somehow, it was connected to him. He vaguely remembered finding a torn textbook in the library, missing pages and sporting a strange font: A Study of Anomalies in Reality. The first page explained that sometimes, concepts from other worlds could not interact with the fabric of the universe. Most anomalies faded quickly from existence, poisoned by the world they found themselves in, but the most dangerous kind projected their metaphorical poison in the opposite direction. The term for such an anomaly was aberration, and any person, place, or object unlucky enough to earn an aberration's ire vanished on the spot.

The Harper unmade things by forcing them out of the timestream, making it so they had never existed at all. That was likely what had happened to his hometown, that library, even his name. He thought it might have been the name of a street, maybe a president. Or maybe that was only because he had run down so many streets, pursued by the Harper, that they seemed to be part of him.

Looking down at his arm, softly glowing with the same light that vaporized the lock, the young man wondered if perhaps he was an aberration of a different kind. Light instead of sound, spatial destruction instead of temporal.

He slipped through the gate and crouched behind the wall, adrenaline coursing as he listened for the Harper's signature hum. It was back--it always came back, no matter how hard he tried to escape it--but quieter now, farther away than it had been a few minutes ago. It almost seemed... cautious. As though it was waiting for him to make the next move.

"That's right," he murmured. "I can fight, too."
