Chapter 11: The Replacement

storymaster Horror 12 Feb 2026

Liz acted differently and her parents noticed. It had started after she had almost drowned in the river next to their small house. She had been fishing, when something grabbed her line and pulled her into the water. Luckily, her dad had seen her flailing about in the water. He dove in, and saved her, but she just wasn't the same. Ever since the incident, she had refused to eat her favorite foods, and didn't hang out with her actual friends. She also had some weird habits, like she hardly ever blinked, and at night, she would stand in the doorway to her parents' bedroom, half of her body behind the door frame, the other half staring, eyes unblinking. So her parents decided to take her to a therapist.

Doctor Oscar Malarky specialized in mental health, but Liz was the most peculiar case he had ever seen.

"Have you had any major changes in your life recently?" he asked her one day.

"I almost drowned a month ago," she stated, so matter of fact like it didn't even matter.

"I see," he responded, very confused, "What about some strange habits I have heard about, like standing in doorways at night, or not blinking?"

"Those are normal," she responded, my parents never noticed them before, that's all."

"Are you sure?" he asked again, "Your parents say that you're not acting like yourself lately." She sat, staring at him. He asked the question again, and she mumbled a response and looked away.

"What?" the doctor asked again.

"She didn't want to come back, I did," was all Liz said, and when she turned back to the doctor, a change had happened. Her eyes were to sunken, face to pale, almost like a dead body. Doctor Malarky took off running.
