Chapter 11: Inheritance Hunt

storymaster Mystery / Thriller 1 day ago

Fat raindrops fell from the downcast sky. Large mud puddles covered everything, and made it dirty. Yet the service went on.

"We gather here to remember the life of our dear Annie Calworth. Even in her dying days, she provided a spark of energy to everyone's life. She will be remembered by family and friends, and everyone who held her dear to their hearts. We now join in a silent prayer to our Lord, who made all things, including our beloved Annie. Jett tugged at his collar, the tight tie cutting off his airflow.

'Why do I need to be here,' he thought to himself, 'It's not like I knew her very well or anything. Sure, I visited her once or twice, but never saw her besides that.' The pastor raised his head, and everyone ended their prayers.

"The burial will now begin,"he stated. Jett looked around at the other family and friends. Most were teary-eyed, holding numerous tissues in their hands, and wiping at their eyes. Others, like him, were wearing no expression on their faces. He spotted a couple of other kids about his age. A girl with long-dark brown hair, caught his eye, and he turned back. The coffin was already in the ground, the first few shovels full of dirt on it. Pretty soon, it would be covered, not one more chance of seeing his aunt again. A branch fell from a tree, and splashed mud over his suit.

"Come on!" he muttered, wiping desperately at his dirty suit coat and pants. His mom would not be happy to see his suit. Suddenly, he heard his name being called. He looked up, still wiping at the mud. The pastor was standing in front of him, shovel in hand.

"Would you like to place a shovel full of dirt?" he asked Jett. Jett looked down at his suit, trying to get the mud off, then responded.

"Sure," The pastor handed him the heavy shovel, and he walked up to the grave. He scooped up dirt from the mound near, and started placing it on top of the coffin when he noticed something. A small piece of paper was sticking in the crack between the lid of the coffin. Without hesitation, he dropped down, and pulled it free. Handwritten, it read," Dear Family, if you are seeing this, it means I have passed on. I don't want you to despair, for in my library was an old book. Inside, you will find another piece of paper, concealing coordinates for the first clue. Love, Annie." Jett almost passed out as he handed it around to the other guests. He was going on a treasure hunt.
