Chapter 11: A Strange Awakening

TheSaltyCookie Literary / Fiction 1 day ago

I feel blinded. I can see a bright cyan light in my face but nothing else. Just the light.

“Guardian?” I hear from a strange voice. “Where are you?” I hear it again “Ah there you are”.

My body tingles. My vision slowly begins to come back. I cover my face, blocking my eyes from the light and see my hand. It is covered in a bright glow and then the glow dissipates.

I feel...strange.

I look up from my hand to see a floating object and it moves closer to my face. It looks like a ball surrounded by polygonal shapes.

Out of fear I swing at it but it vanishes. It then reappears closer to my face.

“I have been looking for your guardian," the strange robot says.

“Guardian?” I am confused, “What do you want me for?”.

“Just follow me, we need to get you to the tower” the robot backs up and I try to stand up. I topple over and get up once more.

I am in a building of some sort. It is in ruins. There is a faded velvet carpet and upturned tables. Leaning against a nearby wall is a corpse with a gap in its chest. I feel a sudden sorrow. He must have died quickly. The more I look around the more corpses I see, a few of them being something inhuman. How did I get here? Who am I?

I see the floating robot leave the building and I follow. The streets are even more ruined. More corpses line the streets. Some look like they were running. A few holding weapons such as knives and firearms. One corpse is by the door to the building. The only thing left on them besides their skeleton is a ring. Seems oddly familiar.

They continue down the street and he finally asks the question “What are you?”

Chapter 22: A Strange Vision

His questioned haunted me. What are you? And yet, at the same time it mesmerised me. Who was I? That I didn't know. I squirmed under his robotic stare that pierced my being. Unable to see myself, I couldn't answer the question. It was a mystery beyond myself.

"Don't you know?" I said, matched his stare in return.

He seemed to turn and gaze at the corpses littering the streets. "Did you do this?"

My mouth hung open. I felt a faintish spell overpower me. Fighting through it, I kept my gaze on the robot's back. "Why would I? It's savage."

"So, all the inhuman species cry. Such devastation doesn't touch or hurt them. They feel only the power of the ring's presence. They find themselves ready to do anything that will make them glow."

"I don't have a ring," I whispered, pushing aside the memory that pecked my mind of a ring glistening on my finger.

"I swear, the vision showed you with it." He turned to me. "Visions never lie."

A whoosh spread over me. I glanced up and saw a swarm of bald eagles circling the ruined city. "They have come to take what is there's,' I said, without a thought.

"Visions never lie..." said the robot again.
