Chapter 11: Warped Rogue

TheSaltyCookie Fantasy 7 hours ago

“You imbecile! How could you let the rogue escape!” The man yells, his fist slamming on his desk as he jumps from his velvet red chair. His crimson coat with silver engravings covering his upper body,

“S-sorry my liege, we are doing our best to find him!” The younger one says, fear covering his face as he stutters in between his words. If only he knew that he isn’t the one in danger, I am not here for him.

The boy rushes out of the room and I hear the baron let out a sigh as he takes a seat in his chair once more. I step out of the shadow aside the bookshelf and begin slowly closing the distance between the two of us.

Even in my crouched state I fail to avoid the wooden floor creak as I step closer and the man turns his head.

Blast!

I place my hand on his nearest shoulder and pull hard, the chair falling backwards. Almost in unison with the fall I turn on the ball of my foot, the knife in my hand following the momentum and the chair as well as his head hit the hard floor with a thud and a crack as the chair splinters, my blade to his throat.

Even following the fall the man manages to keep composure and not let out a yell or shout however the look in his eyes betrays his calm exterior.

“Anis,” His throat pushes against the blade as he speaks barely drawing blood, “You managed to escape your cage.” He dares to speak my name.

I can feel the smirk growing on my face, “My apologies for the warden, he is a bit debilitated at the moment.”

“Any moment now the guards will rush in here and kill you where you stand!”

“Why does everyone say that, you kind of always come at me with your scare tactics but you always just throw me in a cell like I won’t break out.”

His expression shifts suddenly to a mix of confusion and anger and I press the knife harder. “For too long have you underestimated the-”

A swift motion and blood spills from the gash in his neck and his croaks fade to silence and he lays motionless.

“I have grown tired of the useless monologues.”

I rise from the ground and pull out the first drawer of his dark oak desk. False bottom. I slide the wooden panel and underneath lies a small black box, the accents a deep purple and the latch is in pristine condition as the rest of it.

I turn back to the window I entered from previously and I take one look back at the baron. This is the most coin I will have gotten from a hunt ever and he put up little to no challenge.

Before long the kingdom of Redwin will crumble and I will finally be able to leave this life behind.
