Chapter 11: School is boring

Storywriter27 Mystery / Thriller 4 days ago

School is boring.... what else is there to it? I sit here on a Friday afternoon, staring at the ceiling, wishing school would be quicker. Why couldn't it be two days a week and the weekend five days a week? Why does the ceiling look like that...

Chapter 22: Stories In The Ceiling

The ceiling looked like that because it had seen things.

Not in any dramatic, haunted-house way—no ghosts drifting between the fluorescent lights—but in the quiet, patient way only walls can. It had watched generations of students pass beneath it, all with the same glazed eyes, the same slow clock-watching, the same silent bargaining with time.

If I blink long enough, maybe it’ll be the bell.

A faint crack ran across one of the tiles, thin as a pencil line. You hadn’t noticed it before. Now it felt like the most interesting thing in the room. You traced it with your eyes, imagining it was a map—no, a river. Or maybe a fault line, like the Earth itself was trying to split this classroom in two and set everyone free.

What if it did?

What if, right now, the ceiling sighed—just a little—and that crack widened, not in a violent crash, but slowly, gently, like a secret being revealed? Sunlight would pour through, not the dull grey kind from the windows, but something brighter, warmer. Real light. The kind that made everything feel like it mattered more.

You’d stand up first.

“Are we… allowed to go?” someone would ask.

And for once, there wouldn’t be a rule about it. No timetable. No permission slip. No teacher saying, “Not yet.”

Just the open sky where the ceiling used to be.

You blinked. The crack was still there. The lights still hummed. Someone coughed. A chair scraped. Time dragged on exactly as it always had.

But now you couldn’t stop thinking about it.
