Chapter 11: The not-so haunted house
"Hey Katwitch!" Wizbun said with a smile on his face, "Look at this advert!" Katwitch sauntered over and sat on the sofa next to Wizbun.
New haunted house open at 35 Kingsley avenue! Come over if you dare!
"Ooh! Wizbun let's go!" Katwitch suggested whilst smoothing down her sleek black fur. Wizbun yelled, "Yeah! We can take the magicar!"
A couple of minutes later, they arrived at 35 Kingsley avenue "Oh jeepers!" Wizbun whispered, "The outside is actually scarier than the advert said!" Katwitch shrugged and said, "You'll be fine. Now let's go in!" The pair stepped inside. "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" Wizbun screamed. A ghost had just jumped out of a closet. "Oh hold on..." Katwitch said, "There's a wire trailing behind it! Let's follow it!"
"O...o...ok..." Wizbun gulped
They followed the wire and found a trapdoor that led to a control room. "Oh! It's not actually haunted!" Wizbun laughed.
Chapter 22: Katwich and Wizbun
The two felines made their way cleanly through the rest of the house, with the lights turned up and moodlighting gone, the house was far less scary. Plastic animatronics lay crooked, hung up between cotton spiderwebs and lashing of fake blood. They picked their way past a plastic skeleton dangling from the ceiling, its jaw clicking loose in the fake wind machine's breeze.
"Look at this," Katwitch said, flicking a whisker at a cauldron prop bubbling with green dry-ice fog. "They've even got a witch in here somewhere, I bet. Pointy hat, warty nose, the whole sorry costume."
Sure enough, around the next corner stood a mannequin witch, hunched over the cauldron, cackling on a five-second sound loop.
Wizbun snorted so hard he made the fake spiderweb next to him wobble in the air slightly. "That is not what my Mistress looks like. Mistress Ophelia wears cardigans, and follows the latest TikTok makeup tutorials."
"They've even got the potions wrong," Katwitch added, hopping onto the cauldron's rim to inspect the fog machine underneath, bubbling as if full of dish detergent. "Nothing should bubble like that unless you've overdone the frog spit. Mistress Agatha would have my tail if I let a potion foam over like this."
Wizbun poked at the mannequin's hat, and it tipped sideways with a hollow plastic clunk. "And no witch I've ever met has cackled like that. Mistress Ophelia laughs..." he trailed off as his paw circle in the air, searching for words. "Well, not like that."
"That's humans for you," Katwitch said, jumping down and giving her paw a disdainful shake, as if the whole exhibit had left dust on it. "Wizbun, love. If humans knew what we really did after midnight, they wouldn't need Kingsley Avenue at all."
They pushed open the fire exit at the back of the house, and the cold night air hit them like ghosts fogging behind them.
"Race you home," Wizbun said. "Loser tells Mistress Ophelia we got scared by a hand puppet."
Katwitch was already gone.
